LA Networking Event a Success
November 6, 2014
Last month’s professional networking event held in the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion at the Music Center in Los Angeles received a robust response from alumni and friends of Principia. Two hundred people participated, and 32 companies spanning 18 different industries were represented.
Breakout sessions were well attended and ranged from interviewing tips to spiritual perspectives on the job search process. Following these sessions, Rob Hummel (C’78), president and founder of Group 47, delivered the evening’s keynote, "Career Choices: Conventional Wisdom? Or Pursuing Passion?" Then a panel of five professionals, including a systems engineer at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the executive director of recruiting at Northwestern Mutual, shared experiences from their careers and offered advice about what forms of networking are acceptable in their fields.
For the balance of the evening, novice and experienced professionals alike networked, sharing experiences, information, leads, and lots of business cards. And it wasn’t just about younger alums learning from more experienced ones. Many exchanges took place among company representatives on a business-to-business level.
Conversations among attendees continued until nearly 10 p.m., with a clear sense among the crowd of the value of their Principia connections. As one participant put it, “I knew it was going to be beneficial for me to attend tonight, but I was not expecting to get as much out of the evening as I have!”
